Prayers up for J-Dub. Thunder GM Sam Presti said Monday that All-Star Jalen Williams has a fractured left fibula and a dislocated left ankle and will need surgery, less than a day after he was stretchered off the court in Oklahoma City.
What Happened
With 1:14 left in Sunday’s 108-101 win over the Los Angeles Clippers, Williams drove to the basket and came down awkwardly after contact. Clippers guard Kris Dunn was assessed a Flagrant 1 foul, Heavy reports. The Thunder’s medical staff reached him almost immediately and called for a stretcher, according to the Associated Press, and play stopped for about five minutes. On his way off the floor, Williams gave the crowd two thumbs-up.
The Diagnosis
Presti confirmed the injuries at a Monday news conference, and ESPN’s Shams Charania reported the same diagnosis, per CBS Sports. The Thunder have not set a return date. Presti said it would be inappropriate to give a timetable before the procedure, adding, “We’ll have a timeline for everybody once we get through the surgery.” The good news: Presti said Williams is “in great spirits and is extremely optimistic.”
Support poured in from around the league. Draymond Green posted “Prayers up for J Dub,” and Tyrese Haliburton, Paolo Banchero and Alperen Sengun shared messages too, EssentiallySports reports.
It’s a tough turn for a player who has already been through a lot. Williams was an All-Star, an All-NBA pick and a key piece of OKC’s 2025 championship team. He missed 49 games last season, mostly while recovering from wrist surgery and dealing with hamstring injuries, the AP reports. OKC started this season 3-0.
Why it matters: Williams is one of the brightest young stars in the game, and he’d just started to look like himself again. However long his road back is, our community is rooting for him. For more sports with an Atlanta twist, see how the Dream are bringing Finals Game 6 to State Farm Arena.
