Actor Tray Chaney, beloved for his role as Poot on HBO’s The Wire, is opening up about the terrifying EF-2 tornado that ripped through Henry County, Georgia, destroying his family home and leaving his 18-year-old son Malachi critically injured.
The tornado struck suddenly Thursday afternoon in the Laurel Creek subdivision of Locust Grove. Chaney and Malachi were relaxing when the storm hit. “Before you know it, I look to my right and my walls were headed toward my face,” Chaney said. Moments later, he found himself buried under bricks and debris. His son was thrown nearly 300 feet into the woods.
Thanks to quick-thinking neighbors, Malachi was found and rushed to the ICU at Grady Memorial Hospital, where he’s now showing signs of recovery—responding to commands and squeezing his father’s hand.

Though their home is completely gone, Chaney says he’s grateful to be alive. “Everything is gone. But I’m still living and breathing to be able to tell the story,” he shared. “I’ll never look at life the same.”
Malachi, a freshman theater student at Savannah State University, is now in recovery with multiple injuries. A verified GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help the family rebuild and support Malachi’s healing journey.
