OWN is turning a viral hashtag into must-see TV with its newest dating series, Somebody’s Son, premiering Saturday, April 12 at 9pm ET/PT. Inspired by the popular online hashtag #SomebodysSon, which champions the quest for Black love, this reality series takes the digital celebration of romance to the small screen—offering a heartfelt, hilarious, and sometimes dramatic journey toward true connection.

This one-of-a-kind relationship show follows three handsome, successful, and single Black men as they search for “the one” among a group of extraordinary women. But there’s a twist: they won’t be making this journey alone. Each man will be joined by the most influential woman in his life—his mother (or in one case, aunt)—who will not only guide them through the process but also live under the same roof with them and the daters.

Throughout the season, the men, their moms, and the women will experience competitive challenges, bonding exercises, and real-life scenarios that reveal whether love can blossom under the watchful eyes of family. And in true OWN fashion, the show dives deep into the emotions, expectations, and experiences of Black love, all while keeping it entertaining.

Russell continues to work as a pastor and runs his non-profit, Soar Detroit, which focuses on literacy and sports, and this season he celebrates the grand opening of his new gym.  

BRANDON & KRISTINA BOWMAN-SMITH  

Brandon and Kristina Bowman-Smith have been married for 13 years and have two young daughters. When the new season begins, the couple have come back together after a trial separation in an attempt to save their marriage, but they are still on shaky ground. Kristina is a stylist and influencer in Detroit, and this season she dips her toe into the music scene to revitalize her singing career with Brandon’s help. Brandon is the owner of Star Factory, an artist development program, where he trains aspiring singers and recording artists. Brandon pushes Kristina to continue to pursue music and perform, but Kristina is tentative and feels she might not be ready. Kristina will also host an eventful staycation for the group this season. 

ANTHONY & DR. LATOYA THOMPSON  

Anthony and Dr. LaToya Thompson have been married for 16 years and share two sons and a daughter. Anthony works for a touring company and owns a production studio. LaToya still carries the load as the main breadwinner of the family as a successful physical therapist and the owner of Opulence Wines, a fact that has long caused some resentment with Anthony. A perfectionist, LaToya continues to reevaluate her work/life balance and is also struggling with the fact that her children would prefer to confide in Anthony about things. In the new season, we see her try to reestablish a connection with her children, while Anthony is busy with his new podcast venture.  

MARCEL & KIMBERLY DOBINE  

Marcel and Kimberly Dobine have been married for nine years and share two young children. Kimberly is an event planner, designer and founder of the Posh & Popular brand, while Marcel works in the mortgage industry. This season, the Dobines continue to clash with the Samuels. 

BRAVO & LAKEITA SAMUELS  

Bravo and Lakeita Samuels are high school sweethearts who have been together for 21 years and married for seven. Together, they have two daughters. Lakeita is a social service manager, and Bravo is a successful hospitality entrepreneur who owns several clubs and restaurants around Detroit. This season, Samuels ongoing feud with the Dobines comes to a head when Bravo confronts Marcel over Kimberly’s past disruptive behavior.

In an explosive revelation, former Vibe magazine editor-in-chief Danyel Smith has accused Sean “Diddy” Combs of threatening her life during her tenure at the iconic publication. Smith selected Diddy as the cover star for Vibe’s double issue, featuring a creative concept inspired by the 1978 Warren Beatty film Heaven Can Wait. The photos depicted Diddy in white angel wings, with two different versions of the cover highlighting “heavenly” and “hellish” motifs. According to Smith, Diddy demanded to see the covers ahead of publication—a request that violated the magazine’s strict policies.

When Smith denied him access, the Bad Boy Entertainment mogul allegedly escalated his demands, reportedly planning to visit Vibe’s offices to force a change if he didn’t approve of the imagery.

A Threatening Confrontation
Smith recalled Diddy arriving at the Vibe offices accompanied by two security guards, asking the receptionist, “Where’s Danyel?” Staff members, anticipating trouble, quickly devised a plan to protect Smith. She narrowly escaped the building with proofs of the cover in hand, fleeing in a taxi while avoiding a direct confrontation.

The following day, Smith says Diddy called the office and made a chilling threat: “He would see me ‘dead in the trunk of a car,’” she wrote. Standing her ground, Smith insisted he retract the threat. When she warned that she would involve her lawyer, Diddy allegedly revealed, “I know where you are right now. Right on Lexington.”

Smith contacted her lawyer, and shortly after, Diddy faxed over an apology. However, the drama didn’t end there. Days later, the magazine’s servers—which contained the entire issue—were stolen from the office. Rumors swirled that individuals tied to Diddy’s Bad Boy label may have been involved, though this was never confirmed. Luckily, the issue was salvaged thanks to a backup disk kept by the magazine’s art director.

“Watching the reunion episode was very hard to sit through, especially now knowing where my family currently stands,” SoGucci wrote in her heartfelt post. “I was disappointed in my actions because, even though I had my reasons, it should never have been addressed on this platform. I take full accountability for letting the show impact my family’s integrity.”

She continued, “I have apologized publicly and privately to Selena for my part in this production. We are moving forward, putting our family first and focusing on healing.” Williams also shared that the family is now on better terms, with all members, including the children, working towards reconciliation.

Michele is best known for playing the leading role in OWN’s romantic drama series, LOVE IS, which resulted in her being deemed one of Variety’s “10 TV Stars To Watch”.  Following this, Michele was featured as Rosario Dawson’s sister in Sam Esmail’s series BRIARPATCH, and Netflix’s anthology series, Dolly Parton’s HEARTSTRINGS.
