ABOUT KARDEA BROWN Kardea Brown is a contemporary Southern cook born in Charleston, South Carolina. She is of Gullah/Geechee descent, a term used to describe a distinct group of African Americans living in the coastal areas of South Carolina and Georgia who have managed to preserve much of their West African language, culture and cuisine. Her love for cooking started in her grandmother’s kitchen, learning to cook Gullah dishes that were passed down from her mother. Although she loved cooking as a hobby, Kardea did not envision herself pursuing a career within the culinary field. Instead, she obtained a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and embarked on a career in Social Services. But in 2013, she switched gears and began to pursue cooking. She created The New Gullah Supper Club, traveling from state to state cooking traditional Gullah dishes with a contemporary twist. Over the weekend, rappers Fabolous, Safaree, Dave East, Harlem socialite Michelle Smalls, and actor/social influencer Shiggy teamed up with the 2021 BET Awards to kick off a “Summer Ice Cream Takeover” that drove tune-in to “Culture’s Biggest Night” and foot traffic to Black-owned restaurants and creameries.
A fleet of branded ice cream trucks — each with a celebrity host onboard — toured several hotspots in Los Angeles, Brooklyn and Harlem delivering tasty summer treats to local residents in celebration of the BET Awards that took place on Sunday.
The trucks ended each tour at a Black-owned restaurant where a festive, pink carpet cocktail hour took place with a featured “Culture’s Biggest Night” drink. Fans came out in droves to meet and greet the celebrity influencers, participate in trivia games, dance to the hottest music and enjoy a creamy dessert. Over 4,000 scoops of ice scream were distributed during the activation.

Author, salon owner and now restauranteur Gocha Hawkins along with Hennessy VSOP Privilege hosted a festive grand opening celebration for Atlanta’s newest cafe Gocha’s Breakfast Bar. VIPs flocked to the upscale restaurant, located in Atlanta’s affluent Cascade neighborhood, and cheered on as Gocha – along with City of South Fulton Mayor Bill Edwards and South Fulton Chamber of Commerce President Dyan Matthews – cut the ceremonial grand opening ribbon. The party continued inside with music by DJ Roots Queen, complimentary cocktails by Hennessy and a lavish buffet of Gocha’s Breakfast Bar specialties such as shrimp and grits, “Krunch-Tastic” French Toast, “Better Than Yo Momma” Biscuits, and Candied Maple Bacon.
