In an explosive revelation, former Vibe magazine editor-in-chief Danyel Smith has accused Sean “Diddy” Combs of threatening her life during her tenure at the iconic publication. Smith detailed the harrowing experience in a personal essay for The New York Times Magazine, recounting a tumultuous clash over Combs’ December 1997/January 1998 cover story.

The Controversial Cover
Smith selected Diddy as the cover star for Vibe’s double issue, featuring a creative concept inspired by the 1978 Warren Beatty film Heaven Can Wait. The photos depicted Diddy in white angel wings, with two different versions of the cover highlighting “heavenly” and “hellish” motifs. According to Smith, Diddy demanded to see the covers ahead of publication—a request that violated the magazine’s strict policies.

When Smith denied him access, the Bad Boy Entertainment mogul allegedly escalated his demands, reportedly planning to visit Vibe’s offices to force a change if he didn’t approve of the imagery.

A Threatening Confrontation
Smith recalled Diddy arriving at the Vibe offices accompanied by two security guards, asking the receptionist, “Where’s Danyel?” Staff members, anticipating trouble, quickly devised a plan to protect Smith. She narrowly escaped the building with proofs of the cover in hand, fleeing in a taxi while avoiding a direct confrontation.

The following day, Smith says Diddy called the office and made a chilling threat: “He would see me ‘dead in the trunk of a car,’” she wrote. Standing her ground, Smith insisted he retract the threat. When she warned that she would involve her lawyer, Diddy allegedly revealed, “I know where you are right now. Right on Lexington.”

Smith contacted her lawyer, and shortly after, Diddy faxed over an apology. However, the drama didn’t end there. Days later, the magazine’s servers—which contained the entire issue—were stolen from the office. Rumors swirled that individuals tied to Diddy’s Bad Boy label may have been involved, though this was never confirmed. Luckily, the issue was salvaged thanks to a backup disk kept by the magazine’s art director.

Smith’s allegations have reignited conversations about Diddy’s alleged history of intimidation. Representatives for the music mogul declined to comment on the record regarding Smith’s claims.

ABOUT MICHELE WEAVER

Michele is best known for playing the leading role in OWN’s romantic drama series, LOVE IS, which resulted in her being deemed one of Variety’s “10 TV Stars To Watch”.  Following this, Michele was featured as Rosario Dawson’s sister in Sam Esmail’s series BRIARPATCH, and Netflix’s anthology series, Dolly Parton’s HEARTSTRINGS.  

Michele starred opposite Kevin Hart on REAL HUSBANDS OF HOLLYWOOD and series lead in the role of “Luly” on NBC’s original series, COUNCIL OF DADS. She most recently appeared in the series, AHSOKA, as Lieutenant Callahan in a memorable performance. On the feature side, Michele can be seen in the thriller NIGHTHAWKS opposite Chace Crawford. She starred in ILLICIT with Vivica A. Fox and David Ramsey and headlined CHRISTMAS OF YES as “Amy Bell.”  

ABOUT NATHAN OWENS 

Nathan recently wrapped a starring role in the independent thriller, A MOTHER’S LOVE. Prior to that, Nathan recurred as “Julius Vega” on 9-1-1: LONE STAR for FOX. In 2021, he appeared as “Ocean” throughout the second and third seasons of the CW’s BATWOMAN. Furthermore, Nathan made his primetime series-regular debut as “Jesse Morgan” opposite Ana Ortiz and Susan Lucci in Marc Cherry’s DEVIOUS MAIDS. Other credits include guest starring roles on DOLLFACE, THE CARMICHAEL SHOW, and THE AUDITION for Funny or Die.  

Earlier in his career, Nathan appeared as the love interest to Rihanna in her video “CALIFORNIA KING BED”, directed by Anthony Mandler, as well as, opposite Nicki Minaj in her music video “VA VA VOOM”, directed by Hype Williams. Nathan has continued to model throughout the world and has been featured in numerous commercial/print campaigns for GAP, RALPH LAUREN POLO, IZOD, VUORI, PETER MILLAR, and SPERRY. He was the 2nd African-American ever to be in a fragrance campaign for POLO RALPH LAUREN BIG PONY.

Brandon and Kristina Bowman-Smith have been married for 12 years and have two young daughters. When the new season begins, Brandon and Kristina’s marriage is on shaky ground and the couple reveals that they have separated. Kristina, a stylist and influencer in Detroit who has devoted the last decade to raising their children, needs to decide what her life as a single mother looks like. Brandon is the owner of Star Factory, an artist development program, where he trains young people of Detroit with a dream to become singers and recording artists. Many of the couple’s marital woes stem from Brandon’s focus on his profession and the hours spent away from home. After a break-in at the Star Factory, will Brandon and Kristina realize they need each other to pick up the pieces in their business and marriage? Will the couple be able to resolve their differences to keep their family together?

(New York, NY) – Leading true crime network Investigation Discovery announced today that it has expanded its partnership with Emmy® nominated Maxine Productions (“Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV”), and is in production on a docuseries exploring the rise and influence of Sean “Diddy” Combs and the allegations of violent behavior and illegal activity that have trailed the music mogul. As accounts of sexual assault, abusive behaviors, and other disturbing claims surface, the doc traces the story of this self-proclaimed Bad Boy, unraveling allegations of a pattern of depravity. The multipart docuseries is set to premiere in 2025 on ID and Max. 

Furthering ID’s commitment to elevating survivors’ stories, the docuseries will feature the voices of many who have alleged acts of violence and brutality. Through access to archival footage and in-depth reporting from Rolling Stone, along with harrowing testimony from survivors as well as friends and colleagues who knew and worked with Combs before his stardom, the multi-part docuseries will offer insight into unfolding allegations against the once untouchable superstar. It will also highlight the toxic power dynamic that played out within the industry and kept many survivors silenced – until now.   

The project is being produced for ID by Maxine Productions and IPC in association with Rolling Stone Films.
