The Bronx was burning with star power as JAY-Z brought his historic three-show “JAŸ-Z30” anniversary residency at Yankee Stadium to a jaw-dropping conclusion. Billed as the “Extra Innings” finale, the marathon show celebrated the legacy of hip-hop’s finest. But it was the return of hip-hop royalty, Beyoncé, that completely stole the night.
Stepping onto the stage alongside her husband for a showstopping performance of “Drunk in Love,” Queen Bey didn’t just deliver a vocal masterclass—she shut down the internet with a high-fashion, Bronx-inspired streetwear moment. Clad in a custom, athletic-inspired white Yankees top, shimmering violet and blue crystal-embellished micro shorts, and sparkling fishnets, the crowning jewel of her outfit was her feet: a pair of custom, towering, rhinestone-encrusted Jimmy Choo x Timberland Shimmer Suede Crystal Boots.
A Full-Circle Moment for Black Creative Expression
Beyoncé’s stadium-sized footwear choice brought the creative legacy of the Jimmy Choo x Timberland partnership beautifully full circle.
The dazzling shoes weren’t just a luxury pull; they are rooted in a historic cultural collaboration. Back in 2022, Brandice Daniel of Harlem’s Fashion Row—the premier agency creating opportunities for multicultural designers—helped expand the creative footprint of the two global giant brands by pairing them with visionary New York designer Shanel Campbell (@bedonwater).
Campbell co-designed a highly coveted seven-style capsule collection that was deeply anchored in New York City’s glamour, resilience, and rich history of Black creative expression. Seeing Beyoncé command the stage at Yankee Stadium—the epicenter of NYC culture—wearing a design birthed from Black creativity, backed by Harlem’s Fashion Row, was the ultimate tribute to the city’s fashion legacy.
“Born and Raised in the Bronx”: Shanel Campbell on Designing the Vision
For designer Shanel Campbell, seeing Beyoncé perform in her design on night three of the Yankee Stadium residency was a deeply emotional milestone.
“A few years ago, Brandice Daniel of Harlem’s Fashion Row reached out to ask if I would be interested in a shoe design project,” Campbell shared. “This wasn’t the first time Brandice had recommended me for a life-changing opportunity, so I immediately said yes. To my surprise, I was being asked to design a capsule collection merging the worlds of Jimmy Choo and Timberland.”
As a Black girl born and raised in the Bronx, Campbell felt destiny calling. The cultural shorthand of both brands was already written into her DNA:
The Jimmy Choo Influence: “I knew the impact of a Jimmy Choo because I snuck glimpses of Sex and the City while my mom watched before she shooed me away.”
The Timberland Legacy: “I knew the impact of the classic Timberland 6-inch boot because I watched my older sister style her Timbs for school.”
From Mood Boards to the Main Stage
When it came to designing, Campbell’s process was an unapologetic celebration of 2000s Black style icons. She began by curating mood boards featuring the women who defined her childhood aesthetic: Kelis, Mary J. Blige, Lil’ Kim, and Beyoncé.
Campbell executed typography studies of crystallized, cursive graphics inspired by 2000s McBling. But the true catalyst for the crystal stiletto boot came from a single, nostalgic reference image: a nubuck, Timberland-inspired pointed-toe stiletto.
It was the exact style of boot Beyoncé famously wore in her very first music video with JAY-Z, 2002’s “’03 Bonnie & Clyde.”
Ultimately, the dazzling crystal boots that commanded the Yankee Stadium stage came from a place of pure, reciprocal inspiration. As Campbell beautifully put it:
“The crystal boot Beyoncé wore during her performance with Jay-Z… was inspired by her own impact on a young Black girl from the Bronx who loved fashion.”
Decades after Timberlands first became a symbol of NYC identity, Beyoncé and Shanel Campbell proved that the streets, the stage, and the history books still belong to the culture.
