The days of standing in long, crowded lines to see your favorite artist perform just may be a memory tucked away in our minds. Well, at least for the moment, hopefully. Thank you to Covid-19 for forcing us to employ social distancing rules, which have impacted the way we consume performances. I recently had the opportunity to attend my first ever, sold out, drive-in concert created by The Drive-In Concert Series. Being this was now something that would become part of the “New Normal”, I wanted to see how a major production would adapt.
The Drive-In Concert Series, Jokes & Jams featured local award-winning talent. Comedian Marvin Dixon did a great job of engaging spectator participation, often asking the crowd to make noise by blowing their car horns. The artist line-up consisted of songstress, Eric Dawson and Algebra Blessett who looked absolutely amazing in her yellow tutu. The weather was quite soggy, but Algebra brought the sunshine to the stage. For those parked in the back, two large screens were erected so the crowd could see how dapper Anthony David looked as he and Algebra sung a romantic duet. Concert-goers didn’t seem to notice the drizzle as they were dancing in the empty parking spot next to their vehicles that they were allotted for social distancing measures. Blast from the past R&B singer Tony Terry closed the sold out show with his classic, “When I’m With You”.
I would say the first installment of the Drive-In Concert Series was a success logistically and accomplished the daunting task of social distancing while providing a memorable and entertaining evening for the attendees. The next tailgate style Drive-In Concert Series is sure to satisfy the need for fun while being socially responsible..
