“The Hate U Give” is a movie based off of a book with the same title written by Angie Smith. The movie centers around Star Carter (played by Amandla Stenberg) who is constantly switching between two worlds, her poor (mostly black neighborhood) and her school (rich and mostly white). It tackles the concept of double consciousness (Ralph Ellison discusses this in his book “Invisible Man”). A concept that many of us African Americans know all too well. The powerful part about this in the movie, is that it shows a teenager going through this. In other words, many of us start dabbling into double consciousness at a young age. The movie also touches on police brutality. Unfortunately, a subject that many of us know all too well. I was afforded the opportunity to interview some of the stars in the movie, and I asked many of them what they hoped or wanted viewers to take away from the movie. I received some poignant responses. Amandla Stenberg shared that she hoped African Americans “felt represented and afforded the opportunities to express emotions.” Regina Hall, who plays Star’s mother, expressed that she wanted viewers to “walk away as their highest self.” Def Jam recording artist Bobby Session stated that “One need not search externally for courage, you can find that within.” The most resounding response was from Angie Smith. She shared that she hoped this movie “showed our young people that their lives and dreams matter.” Amen Sister. Amen. “The Hate U Give” opens nationwide on October 5.
