Two years after the death of Bobbi Kristina Brown, the new movie titled Bobbi Kristina will make its debut on October 8th on TV One. The made for-TV biopic follows the life of Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown’s only child and her struggles with living in her mother’s shadow.
Last week Latoya Heyward and other media outlets spoke with the cast of the new biopic (via teleconference), and got an inside look of what it was like being a part of this film.
Tosha Whitten-Griggs (Commentator): This question is for all of the cast members. What was it like making this film?
Joy Rovaris (Bobbi Kristina): It was amazing. Bobbi Kristina story was certainly a tragic and my focus was truly into telling her story. I wanted to ensure I was accurately portraying everything about her, including her sense of humor. I made sure I learned her, and watch every interview she did to prepare for this role.
Demetria McKinney (Whitney Houston): This role was like a dream come true for me. Whitney Houston was someone who I’ve always wanted to play. After being homeless and molested, her music is what got me through a dark space. So I certainly prepared for this role and connected with the person on so many levels.
Vivica A. Fox (Pat Houston): Playing the role of Aunt Pat allowed me to find layers and new discoveries. I think I can speak for all of the actors in this film by saying we were very careful in our approach with these roles. We wanted to tell the story, but understood the sensitivity surrounding it. We also made sure we were respectful to the family and its legacy.
Nadji Jeter (Nick Gordon): The role of Nick was an intense role to get into. It was interesting because of how he came off to people compared to the soft spot that Krissy had for him. I think I did a good job at conveying each side. The most challenging part was the fight scene between Krissy and Nick.
Media: I know there was some backlash against the network, and the family not supporting the film. How are you handling all of this?
Tosha: The network has released a public statement which reads as follows:
“We are aware of the reported legal challenge by Bobby Brown regarding the film Bobbi Kristina and are taking appropriate steps on behalf of our network to respond. While we are not able to address our legal response at this time, we stand by the film and its representation of this period in Bobbi Kristina’s life.”
Media: Why was it important to tell her story?
Ty Hodges (Director): I grew up in this industry and being attached to the fame can become dehumanizing. I was super nervous and realized I had to be sensitive. I know that coming from the acting role to now directing, I was prepared to dissect and share the story the right way. I wanted to do this for the youth, because content isn’t directed to our evolution and growth often times. I want young people to walk away from this film with a sense of self-worth.
Tosha: Is there anyone else who wants to share what they want the audience to take away from this film?
Vivica: What I want viewers to take away is a better understanding of who this girl was. The young woman we tragically lost. After watching the film, I hope you can embrace us as actors who love and respect the Houston Family and admire their legacy. This film will definitely take you down memory lane and what to do if you get lost in any relationship.
Joy: After watching this film you would recognize Krissy fight. I want the viewers to learn that you are enough. It still amazes me how much she loved her mother. It actually made me and my mom closer.
Media: How were you able to write this story?
Rhonda Baraka (Writer): My focus wasn’t on stories that was already out there on blogs about Bobbi Kristina. I wanted to uncover the things that people didn’t know; things that only her friends knew about her. I spent numerous hours on the phone with her friends to listen to their stories and moments that they shared with Krissy. I wasn’t interested in the things that was already out there about her. I wanted to share the human side of her story and focus on what felt good; the energy.
Media: What was something different that you learned from this film?
Hassan Johnson (Bobby Brown): I learned the similarities between her and her mother and the love. Like Krissy really loved her mother. I was amazed and even questioned my relationship with my own mother. She really wanted to carry her mother’s legacy and everything that she wanted for herself, she wanted for everyone. I know that everyone who watches this film will be touched as we all was; as this story serves as a testimony for others out there like her.
Make sure to check out the film on TV One Oct 8, 2017 @7p.m. EST.
Who said TV is not funny anymore? In a time where reality drama TV rules.. It’s quite refreshing to know that TV can be great again! I had the pleasure of attending a special media event for the premiere of “Marlon”, a new sitcom starring Marlon Wayans. For those of you who were lucky enough to have ever seen “In Living Color”, this is where you received your first glimpse of a young Marlon Wayans as the DJ and the character, Mr. Ugly Man! He went on to write and produce several spoofs of known movies such as “Scary Movie” and Scary Movie2″ as well as “Fifty Shades of Black”. Who could forget “White Chicks”, another movie written and produced by Wayans. Fast forward to 2017, enter in “Marlon”… destined to be a hit on NBC! I sat down with my 17 year old daughter who is a fan of Marlon Wayans. As we watched the specially selected episodes of the upcoming sitcom, she laughed and thought Marlon was quite funny. “Marlon” gives viewers a peak into the life of Marlon Wayne, a divorced father of two children, who still has a healthy relationship with his ex-wife. Every episode begins with Marlon looking into a camera and video blogging. Each day, Marlon finds himself in some crazy situation, which gets worked out at his ex wife’s house. You are probably saying ok an ex-wife and ex-husband working things out? Hanging out together on a daily basis in a somewhat civil manner? Does that exist? In Marlon’s world, it certainly does! Marlon stated it was “Important to show how a father can still be fully involved in their kids lives” despite the situations that occur between the parents. In “Marlon”, Marlon is not only fully involved but creates situations that only a Wayans could! Not to give away any surprises, but in one episode, his TV daughter’s, Marley (played by Notlim Taylor) first boy crush. Like any loving dad, Marlon is looking out for his baby girl. You can only imagine what lengths Marlon will go through to protect his daughter from the boy who also happens to be a football player who was hitting on Marlon’s ex-wife, Ashley (played by Essence Atkins). You will need to watch the episode for yourself to see how Marlon quickly gets himself in a situation, but by the time the show is over, everything has worked out perfectly and everyone is happy and all smiles! In fact every episode that I have watched brought a smile.. a giggle and laughter to my face. On camera Marlon is not only a talented actor, producer and director off camera, he is one down to earth guy who understands the importance of putting a smile on people’s faces. He is also a father of a teenage daughter and son. So you can guarantee some of his real life situations are wrapped up in his TV family somewhere! One of the questions that I was dying to ask Marlon, was how many takes did they have to do to get through one episode. Marlon responded with “I like two takes, we laugh after the take. Comedy is better when it’s spontaneous.” Spontaneous is the perfect word to describe Marlon. When asked how much of what we see is improv, Marlon said, “Alot, we write a tight script and I am able to put me in the script anyway because I’m in the writer’s room.” Marlon is also one of the Executive Producers for the sitcom. “Some of the improv just happens” “I know Breesha (Webb who plays Yvette) likes to play, I know Diallo (R
iddle, who plays Steve) is a writer, I know Essence, I’ve worked with her and she knows how to work with me. And the kids, when they’re on set, I’m always teaching them.” You can clearly feel the chemistry when you watch the Wayne family on the small screen. Before we ended for the evening, I asked Marlon what would his ultimate dream project be and who would he want to work with. He told me that he wanted to do a “buddy action comedy” that he is starting to write.”I would love to work with Eddie Murphy in a reverse “48 Hours”, where I’m the crook and he’s the cop”. He went on to say he “would love to do a ‘White Chicks 2′ “, could you imagine that? If you haven’t seen “White Chicks”, please put that on your must see list for the weekend! “I would also like to do a great drama wth Denzel directing, that would be awesome.” No matter what project Marlon works on, it is sure to keep the audience laughing. Marlon ended with saying that he “was a late bloomer” and that his “best years are ahead of him”. I couldn’t agree more with Marlon. He is truly amazing and I appreciate the hard work that he employs just to make sure he puts a smile on each and every persons’ face. You can catch the season premiere of NBC’s “Marlon” on August 16th.

With the rise of TV series, Saints & Sinners is making its way to the top of the list. We will see more drama unfold this season at the Greater Hope Baptist Church. Executive Producer Ri-Karlo Handy and Creator Ty Scott collaborated to bring an interesting topic that resonates in the African American culture. N’Style Atlanta host Latoya had an opportunity to interview the cast and discuss their characters in the show and why this has become one of the most talked about series.
Latoya: What can we expect from the cast this season?
Vanessa Bell Calloway: It is Lady Ella way or no way at all. You will see a lot of last season in her, but this season she is a little more devious.
Christian Keys: This season Levi is more of a sinner and a little more willing (laughing).
Clifton Powell: You will have an opportunity to explore different levels of Rex this season; spiritually and emotionally.
Jasmine Burke: Well, Dr. Christie is still sinning (laughing).
Demetria McKinney: Tamara is the heart of the church. She shows the faith and love. She shows that love is twisted and there’s still a thin line between love and hate.
Latoya: What is it like playing a ruthless character like Lady Ella?
Vanessa Bell Calloway: It is a lot of fun. My old life is not that great so being able to be myself is what I love. I figured if they going to pay someone to be the bitch, why not me?
I always enjoy playing a powerful black woman. Lady Ella brings so much emotion this season. I can’t wait for everyone to see.
Latoya: What do you like most about this project?
Clifton Powell: I would have to say the cast. It feels like going to work with family.
You can expect to see more guest appearances and new music from Kandi Burress, Keith Robinson (Miles Calloway), Keke Wyatt, Tank, and David Banner. Bounce TV plans to continue bringing shows that connects with the African American audience. Be sure to tune in every Sunday at 9:00pm (ET/PT) and watch how everyone’s dark past comes to light, and the difference between being a saint or a sinner becomes more distorted than ever.
