AAMBC which stands for African Americans on the Move Book Club was created in February 2008 by Tamika Newhouse. What started as an online book club grew into a national phenomenon. The sole purpose was to expose the unknown writer and to give them the opportunity to win accolades. A tradition still highly expressed to this very date, AAMBC still caters to the unknown writer. They have single handedly worked with well over six hundred writers’ new, seasoned, and considered celebrity status. From first time writers to nationally known they have consistently set the tone to support and promote black writers.
To understand the importance of AAMBC’s presence in the book industry is to understand the value of supporting our black writers. The awards will serve as the premiere event the industry will talk about year after year. It will be blended with new writers to celebritwriters as well as musicians, celebrity actors, and more.

Friday October 7th I attended the advance media screening of Focus Features film, Loving starring Ruth Nega and Joel Edgerton.
Loving is about an interracial couple, Richard and Mildred Loving, whom were arrested in Virgina in 1958 because they were married. They were sentenced by Judge Leon Bazile to a one year suspended jail sentence; on the provision that they leave “Caroline County and the state of Virginia at once and do not return together or at the same time to said county and state for a period of twenty-five years”
In 1963 Mildred courageously wrote the United States Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy asking for help with their case so that the Lovings could return to Virginia together. Though he could not help them himself he referred her to ACLU attorney Bernard Cohen; whom later joined Philip Hirschkop, a civil rights lawyer to present their case to the Supreme court.
This breath taking film was written and Directed by Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter, Mud, Midnight Special). His ability to capture the intensity of their love and the importance of this civil rights case is beautifully done. Every moment of this movie will have you at the edge of your seat anxiously awaiting the outcome. The chemistry between Ruth and Joel is perfect. Ruth and Joel spent time in the town of Central Point where Richard and Mildred lived and are now buried visiting their graves, location of their home, and meeting with family members to capture the spirit of the couple. The majority of the film was filmed on location in Central Point where the events originally happened bringing authenticity to each scene.
As a product of a bi-racial family I can tell you this love story pulls at every heart string. The Lovings are an inspiration to couples everywhere and this monumental case in history deserves to be told over and over again!

November 4 In Select Theaters
What better way to bring in the fall then honoring someone who has excelled in the industry of fashion and music. Last night Kontrol Magazine hosted their annual Women of Style Dinner at Suite Lounge celebrating legendary Chilli from TLC.
The dinner included industry notables such as comedian Chris Tucker, former member of Destiny Child Latavia Roberson, TV Personality Traci Steele, SWV member Leanne “Lelee” Lyons and Kameelah Williams from the group 702. The night concluded with a presentation to Chilli for not only her contribution to fashion, but her diligent work in the community; immediately followed by a two course meal and drinks sponsored by Effen Vodka. Check out highlights from the event.
This past Saturday I attended the BET Hip Hop Awards here in Atlanta. The show featured the new generation of hip hop with rappers and entertainers such as Designer, Dae Dae, Lil Yachty and 21 Savage. O.T. Genasis had the crowd going crazy with his hit single, “Cut It.” I thoroughly enjoyed the show, especially the Cypher. Some of Phillies most underrated artist reunited for one of the best cypher performances I’ve ever seen.
The fashion on the green carpet this year was creative and bold. Denim was trending amongst the guys and black was definitely the color of the evening for the females. Rapper Remy Ma looked stunning in her all black studded jumpsuit. Cardi B even pushed through in her all black jumpsuit by designer Adam Selman. I love how so many new designers and stylist work are being displayed more. I too rocked an all black jumpsuit by celebrity stylist Phoenyx Reign. She designs the best pieces for plus women. I love how comfortable and versatile her pieces are. Brooklyn rapper Fabolous turned heads in his denim jacket with floral patch work by Duckie Confetti. Loved! Here’s a sneak peek at highlights from the show. It airs on October 4 at 8P/7C. Be sure to tune in.
